Around Purple belt the Jiu Jitsu game changes because your opponents are no longer beginners but are rather experienced players with thousands of hours of practice. It’s a difficult spot because these practitioners can see that they’re obviously better than lower belts, but still seem miles behind upper belts and longtime veterans. To continue to improve you need to take your technique and “Jiu Jitsu IQ” to the next level.
At this point you need an elite grappler to learn from. An “OK” teacher is not good enough because their techniques and methodologies will not be good enough to work on the upper echelon of grapplers. Similarly, Advanced Jiu Jitsu is about discovering what works for YOU and perfecting it - you won’t ever be great by only doing your instructors’ moves. You need a coach with intricate knowledge of all the Jiu Jitsu positions, techniques, submissions, and tactics so they can help you discover what works best for you. This is why SJJP only lists instructors who are well known, legitimate, high-level Black belts.
